Replica Eames Chair - my favorite Mid Century Modern design
Of course, an original, real and genuine Eames chair would cost you hundreds of dollars.
I've wanted one for many years. 'When I'm rich' is what I'd think. Then it became evident that I was most unlikely to ever be rich. So 'when I win the lottery' I thought - rather foolishly because I never do the lottery.
It slowly dawned on me that if I was really going to own what is, to me, the best chair design ever, it would have to be a reproduction.
I admit that I have a thing about chairs. Freud might have a theory as to why, but I don't have a clue. All I do know is that the Eames Lounge Chair Wood (LCW as it is known) is one of the most stylish pieces of furniture I have ever seen.
When I was in the UK I worked for several years in the furniture and interior design world and saw some pretty amazing things. But nothing ever changed my mind about the Eames chair. When I found out that I could afford a replica, with the added convenience of buying it online, my mind was made up.
I purchased this probably ten years ago now and I still love it so much. It pleases my eye many times a day, every time I see it. But that's not all.
It's hard to believe but this is probably the most comfortable chair I've ever known. It's sturdy too - my 200lb plus other half uses it every day.
I debated long and hard about buying a reproduction. One part of my mind doesn't like replicas - I usually prefer originals whenever possible - but on the other hand, I knew that the chances of me ever being able to afford 'the real thing' were minimal to say the least.
The important point is that I now have this wonderful chair in my Mid Century Modern apartment and it gives me joy every day. Worth every penny.
This photograph shows my own replica Eames LCW in my home.
This chair is acknowledged by experts as 'greatest design of the twentieth century'. In the video below you can learn more about this classic design icon.
There is another aspect to the video you'll see below. If you love the chair, as I do, then maybe you will see one for sale on line or at a yardsale that claims to be original but is being offered at a remarkably good price.
How can you tell if an Eames chair is an original or a replica? How can you date it and tell when it was made? The video below will help you find out.
If you love Mid Century Modern design - as I do - you'll love these products too. The bench that you see is an excellent replica of the Herman Miller / George Nelson bench. This is a wonderfully flexible piece of furniture that can be used in any room in the home.
The one we have in our home holds the TV set in our lounge. They also look fabulous at the foot of the bed in your bedroom. Place it under a window, displaying your favourite objets d'art. I've even seen this lovely item used in the bathroom.
It's available in several sizes and suits almost any décor.
If you have room for the full sized Arco lamp in your home,I envy you enormously - we only have the space for a small version in our tiny apartment. It's such a classic design and again, suits most decorating styles.
Are these Mid-Century Modern replicas the antiques of the future?
The most comfortable chair
Sometimes, visitors to my home have asked if the Eames chair is comfortable. They all agree that it's wonderfully stylish but, they ask,is it just for show? Or is it genuinely a useful piece of furniture?
I have two answers to that. The first is that the chair would not have endured as a stunning design classic if it didn't perform its function - in other words, be a comfortable and useable item.
I live in a tiny home and can't afford to take up space for any item that is purely for style and that isn't practical.
My second answer is easy. I say 'it on it and find out for yourself'.
They are astonished at how very comfortable the chair is. I can sit for hours in mine, reading, and it's more comfortable than any upholstered chair.
It's an absolute winner in every way.
