The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel: Review

Star cast, star film location

It was almost inevitable that I was going to love this movie.

Take a handful of my favourite actors, add a witty script and an entertaining plot and then, to cap it all, locate the action in India. Add great photography into the mix and I knew that this would become a lifelong favorite.

I highly recommend it. Below, you'll see some video clips from the film and I'm sure that you'll agree that the premise is interesting,to say the least.

The actors

One glimpse at the DVD cover on the right will show you the caliber of the actors. When this bunch get together, you know you're in for a real treat. So many of my favorite films feature these people and having them perform together is one film is incredible.

This is still a relatively new film but I imagine that it will become a classic.

'Mature'

You'll have noticed, of course, that the majority of the actors are what the film calls 'in their golden years' and that's largely what this film is about. A group of older people decide to go to spend their last years in a retirement hotel in India; some with more reluctance than others. As you'll see from the trailer below, the hotel is not exactly as they had thought when they had checked it out in the only way possible - on the internet.

Needless to say, there are many wonderful surprises in store.

Honored actors

All the actors in this film are acknowledged as being the best by both the general public and their peers. In addition, three are Dames of the British Empire. Two have been awarded Orders of the British Empire by Her Majesty the Queen for their services to the entertainment industry.

How can this not be a great film? Read on.

See the trailer and a short clip

The official trailer gives you flavor of what's to come.

As you can see from the movie clip, some of the group have accepted the idea of being in India but others definitely have not.

An added bonus in this film is the remarkable young Indian hotel owner who is determined to make his property a success and please his British guests.

Every actor in this wonderful film is superb. But if I had to single out one in particular - and that's so difficult - I think it would be Maggie Smith. As you can see in the videos, she is one of the members of the group who certainly does not like India.

More film recommendations

If you like Marigold, then I'd highly recommend these movies too.

Judi Dench and Maggie Smith

These actors have been friends for many years. Both have the most wonderful sense of fun and their acting is remarkable. Below, see another film in which they appear together.

Ladies in Lavender
Ladies in Lavender
This film is currently on my wishlist so there's nothing I can tell you about it - yet.If you've seen it though, do let me know your opinion in the comments section below. I'd love to hear from you. Starring both Judi Dench and Maggie Smith - who in real life have been friends for many years - I'm sure that it's a winner.

Judi Dench also stars in the film below - playing a completely different role to the one she performs so well in Marigold. In the production below, she is Queen Victoria.

Her Majesty, Mrs Brown
Her Majesty, Mrs Brown
Of all the truly wonderful films starring Dame Judi Dench, I think this stands out as a favorite. She plays the widowed Queen Victoria and this is about her alleged affair - so let's say 'friendship' with her Scottish servant, John Brown. The part of John Brown is played brilliantly by Billy Connolly. We are so used to thinking about the 'we are not amused' Queen Victoria image and this film shows a different side altogether.

I have to say that I think the female actors steal the show in Marigold. Two of them are also in the film below - another one that I highly recommend.

Calendar Girls
Calendar Girls
I've added this film because it's one of my firm favorites and features two of the wonderful actors from 'Marigold'.They are Celia Imrie and Penelope Wilton.I've long admired both these actresses and they are excellent in this lovely and funny film
