Appliances for a Healthy Home - wishlist
Five appliances for a healthier home
I am certain that even the domestic appliances we choose in our homes can make our lives much healthier and that's why I have a wishlist of products that I intend to buy. Very soon.
Of all the various appliances I have seen on websites recently, I have decided that these are the ones that I need to make my tiny apartment an even better, cleaner and definitely healthier place to be and live. They are recommended by professionals and experts,
Ah, that tiny apartment of mine ... there are many products I see and think how how wonderful they are and how useful they would be but one of my first considerations has to be that of storage space. Anything I buy for the home has to be easy to store and, if it's for the kitchen, it has to be very compact if it's going to live on the countertop.
Another major consideration - for most of us, I think - is the cost of appliances. At time of writing, these appliances will cost me $250 for the five and I've worked out how I'm going to pay for them - painlessly. If you agree that these are great appliances that you'd like on your wishlist too, I've added the details so that you can order them online or save them to your own list.
Electric Food Dehydrator
This is so inexpensive and is going to save me a lot of money - and here's the reason why. I really hate to go grocery shopping; he loves it. Therefore I have no idea what's going to appear in the weekly grocery supplies. This can make for some very interesting meals when I look in the fridge and think 'what on earth am I going to make with this lot?'
What he does know though is that he must buy lots of fresh fruits and vegetables - sometimes too much. I hate food waste with a vengeance so I'm often faced with a banana, a few strawberries, a couple of carrots, you get the idea, that need to be used up.
So drying sliced fruits and vegetables will be wonderful. Then we'll have healthy snacks! I like the low price, the fact that it comes with a recipe booklet AND a ten year guarantee.
It's called the Ronco FD1005WHGEN 5-Tray Electric Food Dehydrator.
This is a great price when you consider the savings that you can make. It will also be very handy here in Florida when the power goes off because of tropical storms. When this happens, food in the fridge will need throwing away after a day or two, but not with this great little machine! It's also a great-looking appliance and I can imagine that it will look fine on my countertop - especially when it's full of lovely healthy fruit and vegetables
Robotic Floor Cleaner
This is the most expensive item on my list but I'm seriously in love with it. I had a robotic vacuum cleaner when they were first on the market and it was OK. But the technology has come on a long way since those days.
This one isn't a vacuum - it's for hard floors, not carpets - but it's brilliant. It sweeps the floors, then washes them and looks remarkably cool at the same time. It's small too, so it won't take up much room in my tiny apartment.
Another feature I love about this is that you don't have to empty it! It works using micro-fiber cloths - one type specifically for sweeping and the other for mopping. It gets even better because these cloths aren't disposables that you throw away after each use, (although you can use Swiffer disposables with this machine) they are completely machine washable. It's not often that I get excited about a cleaning product but I seriously need this machine!
Mint Automatic Hard Floor Cleaner, 4200
I know that once I have this I'm going to absolutely love it. I love the way it looks so stylish and it will be perfect for my hardwood floors - OK, laminate but they look like wood! It's the most expensive appliance on my wishlist but I know that I'll use it every day so on a cost-per-use basis, I'll certainly be getting great value for money.
Flashlight & phone charger
This is the least expensive item on my list but I think it's worth its weight in gold. Although this is described as a flashlight, it's hand-cranked which means that when the power if off - or when you're away from home - you only need to turn the handle a couple of times and you've got light - pretty brilliant idea.It will also charge my phone and, the manufacturers say, power any small appliance. Exactly which, I don't know yet - I'll report back - but if it can make me a cup of tea during a power outage, that's fine with me.
Most of us today can't rely 100% on electrical power in the home. Certainly that's the case for us here in Florida, so this will be a splendid addition to the home. It's compact too so won't take up much storage space. Oh, and it's another cool-looking appliance!
It is the American Red Cross Clipray the crank-powered, clip-on flashlight and smartphone charger, ARCCR100R-SNG
When we last had a huge power outage - for over a week during Hurricane Wilma - we didn't really worry about our cell phones. In those days, we didn't text or browse the internet on our phones, they were used as,well, phones. If I couldn't use my cellphone these days, I'd be lost. This is a low cost genius appliance.
Nutritional scales
This is one of those products that I never realized I needed - until I read about it on the web. I don't have any kitchen scales and don't really feel the need for them but I now realise that this is one of those must-haves for my household.
This clever little machine tells you the nutritional value of the foods you're weighing. How cool is that?It will tell you the calorie values, the fat content, the cholesterol values and everything you need to know. In it's database (yes, food scales with a database!) almost a thousand different foods are programmed in.
It is the Kitrics Digital Nutrition Scale
It allows you to add up to 99 that it might not have thought of. Brilliant. It's battery operated so it can go anywhere and, if the photograph is anything to go by, it's a small unit that will be perfect in my teeny-tiny kitchen.
Handheld steam cleaner
Oops! I'm getting excited about another cleaning product. I must be turning into my mother in my old age. But I think that this is an appliance that I must have. The great thing about cleaning with steam is that there's no need to use harsh disinfectants - that's something I really want to achieve in my home. If you're anything like me, you probably find that mysterious bits of gunk need cleaning up from time to time and steam is the way to deal with it - healthily.
Because this is a steam cleaner, it can clean just about any surface or material. The manufacturers sell a special cleaning disinfectant to use in this appliance but you can use anything - or nothing at all, just the steam power. It comes with tons of attachments too - for cleaning glass, fabrics - anything. This is going to save me loads of money because I won't have to have lots of spray cleaners and our apartment will be clean and healthy!
Details: Hoover TwinTank Handheld Steam Cleaner, WH20100
Because this will clean just about everything, I really think that with this, along with the robotic floor cleaner, is the only cleaning appliance I need. I'll be able to throw out all the chemicals under the sink! I love the way it has so many useful attachments and its quite small so it will be easy to store in this tiny apartment.
How I'm going to pay for these
Incredibly, the total for these products (at time of writing) is less than $250. That's all very well but I don't have $250 to go out and spend on household goods. So here's what I'm going to do.I plan to buy these products in six month's time. If I save just $1.39 every day - which isn't too hard to do - I can own all five of these fabulous appliances painlessly!
The products are available from Amazon.
